# Language

> Understand how the account language sets the member web portal interface and the email notifications users receive, how users change it, and how the member mobile app picks its language

Every user can set their own account language in the member portal, independently of the [location and network language](/docs/general/language) you set.

## Account language

The account language sets:

* The member web portal interface for that user.
* The email notifications sent to them.
* The push notifications delivered to them in the member web portal.

Spacebring assigns the account language automatically the first time a user logs in, taking it from the language of the browser or device they log in with. If that language isn't one of the [supported languages](/docs/general/language#supported-languages), the account language falls back to English. From then on it changes only when the user changes it — later log ins never overwrite it.

<Info>
  For an invited user, the **Language** the administrator picked in the **Invitation** section governs the invitation email only. It defaults to the location language, and the user's browser or device language replaces it as soon as they log in for the first time.
</Info>

To change their account language, users do the following:

1. Go to the **Account** page by pressing a button with their profile image, initials, or user icon on the member web portal's main page.
2. Navigate to the **Language** page.
3. Select the language and press **Save**.

<Info>
  The account language can only be changed in the member web portal, and it doesn't reach the member mobile app.
</Info>

## Language of the member mobile app

If you offer the [member mobile app](/docs/member-mobile-app), its language works differently from the account language. It follows the language of the user's device, and sets:

* The member mobile app interface.
* The push notifications the app delivers to that device.

When a user first opens the app, it uses their device language if that language is one of the [supported languages](/docs/general/language#supported-languages), and English if it isn't. There is no language setting inside the app — users change it in their device settings:

* **iOS and iPadOS**. Go to their device's **Settings** > select the member mobile app > change language under the **Preferred Language** section.
* **macOS**. The language is inherited from their system's preferences. [Change macOS preferred languages](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-language-region-general-preferences-intl163/mac)
* **Android**. The language is inherited from Android settings. [Change Android system language](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32047?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid\&oco=1#:~:text=Change%20the%20language%20on%20your%20Android%20device)

## FAQs

<Accordion title="Why does a user receive emails in the wrong language?">
  Email notifications follow the account language, which Spacebring took from the browser or device the user first logged in with. Ask the user to correct it in the member web portal: **Account** > **Language** > select the language > **Save**. Changing the language on their phone doesn't help, because the device language only reaches the member mobile app interface and its push notifications.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Does the browser language become the user's account language automatically?">
  Yes. A user who never opens the **Language** page keeps the language of the browser or device they first logged in with, and receives emails in it. This applies to invited members too: their first log in replaces the language the administrator chose for the invitation email. Nothing in the product changes it afterwards — only the user can, and only from the member web portal.
